Charles Henry Pickersgill

Shrewsbury

Charles Henry Pickersgill, a native of Hull, rests in Shrewsbury General Cemetery.

Born in 1880 to Charles and Eliza Pickersgill, Charles remained in Hull, where he met Annie Pullon, they had one child, Lillian Pullon, who was born in 1911. Charles and Annie did not marry until one week after he enlisted into the Army.
Charles enlisted in Hull on October 1st 1914. After completing a few months training Charles found him self in France for the first time. He arrived May 15th 1915 and formed a draft of men that was sent as replacements to the 2nd Bn. East Yorkshire Regiment.

Charles had only been in France for 3 weeks when he suffered a gunshot wound to the head and scalp on June 2nd 1915. Two men of his battalion were killed in action that day.

 

 

 

 

 

The following day Charles was sent to a military hospital at Bailleul. Again, one day later, Charles was transferred to Vebraill Military Hospital where he remained until June 17th 1915 at which point he arrived in the UK.
In England, Charles was transferred to Quarry Place Military Auxiliary Hospital, Shrewsbury. He remained in the hospital until his death. Charles died of his wounds in the presence of his wife, on July 17th 1915. 6 Weeks after sustaining his wounds.
