6th Bn. King’s Shropshire Light Infantry 1914-1919

Recommended Books

Originally released in 2000, Annette Burgoyne, after years of research produced a truly impressive account of 6th KSLI movements during The Great War, from it’s 1914 raising through to it’s disbandment at the conclusion of the war in 1919. The use of maps are particularly worthy of note as is the inclusion 6th’s roll of honour.

DAWLEYS LOST GENERATION

This book is the history of the men and women from Dawley, Shropshire who gave their lives during the First World War. Dawley has now become part of Telford, but at the start of the First War had it’s own Urban District Council and it is this area that Dave Shaw has looked at as the scope of his book.

During three years of research, Dave has gone from a start point of 143 names on the War memorial in the Dawley Rest Rooms to a total of 202 names, everybody in the book had either been born in the Dawley district or where living there at the time of their enlistment or are on the War memorial.

The book tries to uncover details on all their lives before joining up, it also shows where they are now remembered (Cemeteries & Memorials) and  thanks to the Commonwealth War Graves commission gives directions on how to find them.

Dave has included a list of Gallantry awards won by Dawley men, dates and facts of how the award was won (If Known). The book also includes a piece on Dawleys ‘Black Day’ which is a phrase used by the author to sum up the 30th December 1917 when 5 Dawley men where killed in action and at least 2 others where so badly wounded that they died of wounds within a couple of days, all the men where serving with the 1/4th KSLI at the time.

The intention of the book was to bring these brave Dawley men & women back from just being a name on a memorial, The war may be nearly 100 years ago but these brave Dawley residents gave their lives for our tomorrows.
